On June 12, 2025, flight AI171, operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, departed from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (Ahmedabad) at 13:38 local time, en route to London.
Shortly after takeoff, the flight crew issued a “Mayday” call. Radio contact was lost seconds later, as the aircraft reached approximately 600 feet AGL.
Video evidence suggests the aircraft failed to achieve a positive rate of climb and the landing gear remained extended.
The aircraft impacted a densely populated area in the Meghani Nagar district, striking a hostel housing medical students from B.J. Medical College. The crash caused a major explosion and significant smoke column.
There were 242 people onboard: 230 passengers (169 Indian nationals, 53 British, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian) and 12 crew members.
As of now, at least 40 bodies have been recovered. The total number of casualties —including those on the ground— may be higher.
Authorities have stated that survival is unlikely for those onboard. Recovery efforts are ongoing at both the wreckage and the adjacent damaged structures.
This marks the first major accident involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner since the type entered commercial service in 2011.
There are approximately 1,200 B787s in service worldwide, performing about 2,200 daily operations.
Investigators from India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) have been deployed to determine the cause.
No official fatality count has been released, but preliminary reports suggest most or all occupants may have perished.
Flight operations at Ahmedabad Airport have resumed.
Updates will be provided as more verified information becomes available. Speculation will be strictly avoided; all assessments will be grounded in confirmed facts as released by the investigating agencies and competent authorities.
